Plug plug plug

So, we all know I hate competition, and I have never been fond of the mentality behind sketchbattle and sketchwar, however playful everyone involved claims to be.

Buuuuuuuuut, Will has done an exceptional job clambering through the ranks of SketchWar, and I was witness to the crazy amount of work he put into his last entry. But, as per usual with the popularity-based nature of the internet, his competition’s massive fanbase is becoming an overwhelming factor in the vote outcome.

So! Hop on over to the SketchWar Grand Finals and vote as you see fit.

Darren is smart!

Darren has a paper published!

I….have no idea what it’s about. But it sounds cool!

My most prevalent memory of Darren the physicist is a tie between him riding up and down the hall of Acheson on his scooter, capped in an ushanka and wielding a bull whip, and him stuffing the half-emptied bag out of the box wine down his pants, spigot out the crotch, and inebriating the masses thusly.

Glad to see you are making something of yourself, Darren!

Ego-strokes round 2

Referring to this entry, here’s round 2.

D Flo causes infectious laughter. I remember when I was up north, everyone in the house always knew when I was on the phone with D Flo, because it wasn’t long after “hello” that we’d both be bellowing out laughs about some ridiculous thing or another. I remember D Flo was one of my favorite people to show comics to. I’d finish a Halo comic, run up and give it to him, and fidget there, watching his eyes, waiting for him to reach the punchline, and be rewarded by one of my favorite laughs. Spending time with D Flo feels natural, as if he’s always been there. The Blue Bike Gang, Walmart runs, or even just sitting and watching him play Age of Mythology over his shoulder, keeping an extra eye on the invasive red dots on the radar. D Flo is one of those rare people that I share a brainwave frequency with. It makes playing co-op games so natural: Halo, Ghost Recon, Desert Conflict (ah, Kuwait never had to worry with us around!), and of course, Taboo (“Mogwai! Mogwai!”). D Flo is my partner in crime, stage management or otherwise, and whenever I am with him, I feel light and playful and full of energy, as if joining forces to save the world is no hard feat.

In other news, Ken and I had OpenCanvas fun this afternoon.

Another Plug ‘n Chug

Okay, this is to make up for that survey post.

Internet Acquaintance and fellow Collaborator Stephen has asked that people plug his comic for its 2 year anniversary. So I am. Go read it. Stephen draws THE most expressive stick figure people EVER! And is often able to capture facial emotions that I could only dream about drawing.

I highly recommend the “random!” button (that was my idea)

So go forth and become new readers!

Plug ‘n Chug

I wanted to plug some cool links to some of my closest friends’ artistic endeavors.

First up, for those with a short attention span, I recommend Brendan’s Anacrusis, a constrained writing project in which he writes short stories that are exactly 101 words long, 5 days a week. You can also get it as a newsfeed from

For those with a much longer attention span you must explore The Little Blue Penguin, Dave’s site of wonderful writings, including Just Something, his serial novel.

For the glasstistically inclined, look at Ken’s stuff, because Ken’s stuff is awesome. Congratulations to Ken for getting a for-real job as a glassblower.

For the musical types, D Flo’s skills as a composer are boundless. Be sure to check out his requiem (it comes in 3 parts), which was his final senior composition. It is awesome, though the recording quality is somewhat poor (if anyone has good sound editing skills and knows if there is a way to fix this, please let me know).

For the theatrical sorts, you must look at Carleton’s website, and see his latest production photos from the shows he designed lights for. He is the best lighting designer who has also been my boyfriend ever!

Musica!

D Flo is an awesome composer, and since I feel like showing off other people’s stuff today, I figured a plug was in order. Now, I used to play the piano (still wish I did), so I have the inklings of musical know-how, but the thought of *creating* a piece of music is infinitely perplexing to me (and the thought of how he mulls about in the music lab composing day and night like a phantom is infinitely+1 perplexing to me).

Anyway, here’s an impressive Sonata he wrote, and I can’t for the life of me remember who is performing it! Pity, too, I wanted to give her kudos (D Flo likes to write pieces that will make the fingers of any normal pianist shrivel and fall off, so anyone who can play one of his works has my admiration). Crank it up, it was recorded in an open room, so the volume’s somewhat low. So, with a little title addition by me…

Sonata #1 in D Flo Minor

I feel rather lucky that he said he would write a score for the cartoon I will create for this year’s student film festival. Muahaha!

Stay tuned for further showing off of other people’s stuff…
