Picking a Photo

As mentioned on Facebook, my library is having an amateur photo contest and I’d like to submit something, but I’m having trouble picking out a picture. Based on feedback from others and a few of my favorites, I’ve narrowed it down to 8 photos to choose from. I can only pick one, and I think I’ll submit either to Still Life, Animal, or Scenic categories.

Now the hard part, which one of these is the best?

I’ll be a bit more straightforward in my opinion, so i hope you don’t mind. 🙂 The Flamingos and the Bridge-Sunset both stand out, mostly because the other pictures are quite good by themselves but don’t convey their message / central motif (sp?) quite clear enough. They lack that “special something” that a photo should have in order to stand out more than the others.

The bridge scenery is well divided and has a good color choice, but it could’ve gotten that last touch by centralizing the sun in mid of the round bridge shape whilst leaving the tree out of the scenery. In general the scenery is very pleasant to look at and would do very well as a printed wallpaper.

The flamingos struck my eye because the shadow shapes and diagonal alignment of the birds creates quite the interesting “tension” which is also increased by cutting off some birds at the corners which kinda amplifies the focus on geometry / shadows.

The cemetary came in as a close third IMO due to the calamity the scene conveys. However it lacks that one eye-catcher element as it is now. I can guess that the color-glass tombstone is the central element, so i guess bringing it to the image center might add to the effect.

Hope that helps you to narrow down your choice – and good luck with the contest – and also a happy new year to you. 🙂
